10 WAVES

When a slave ship bound for the New World wrecked off the coast of Bequia in 1675, some of the Africans were able to escape and swim to safety. After moving to St. Vincent and then being banished by the British government to the barren island of Roatan, the Garifuna people (as they were now called) began to settle along the coast of Central America, in Honduras, Belize, Guatemala and Nicaragua.

In the 1980's when much of this culture was being forgotten, a native Belizean begun to record the Garifuna music which then snowballed into a resurgence of pride for this amazing group of people.
