Singing Through The Trees
Nepal is a country of many things. Known for the Himalayan mountains in the north, many people are unaware of the diversity of culture that exists. With Tibet to the north, India to the south, east and west, as well as Bangladesh and Bhutan not far away, Nepal is a multi ethnic country. The roots of Nepalese culture date back at least eleven thousand years and as many of the old traditions seem to slowly be fading away, we visit with a few young musicians who are making an effort to keep traditional music alive.
Barta and Anjan play traditional Gandharva music, which began around World War 1, when musicians would travel from village to village singing the latest current events and stories from other villages.
NIGHT is a band that has traveled throughout the country learning the music of different regions and also how to make the instruments that are used. They blend these native sounds with contemporary music and lyrics. The most current cd is part of a novel/music/and visual project currently in production.
